Nature and Territory
The property, due to its extraordinary and prominent location, enjoys the wonderful climate that the hills above the Maremma are renowned for: winters are gentle with few rainy days and summers are cool and dry. The seasonal climate change is moderate allowing those guests who wish to avoid the very hot summers or excessively cold winters an opportunity to really enjoy their stay irrespective of the time of year. The estate’s facilities, including the swimming pool, trekking routes and naturalist excursions allow all guests a rich and varied stay. Furthermore, the Maremma provides a host of interesting trips for those wishing to fully appreciate this wonderful part of Tuscany.
The nearby sea is regarded as one of the most beautiful coastlines in Italy and is only a few minutes away by car (Punta Ala, Torre Civetta, Follonica, Castiglione della Pescaia). It offers wide beaches with shady pine woods (Casetta Civilini, Torre Mozza, Prato Ranieri) or lovely rock shores (Le Rocchette). The Argentario promontory has beaches and harbours that attracts visitors from all over Europe (Porto Ercole, Porto Santo Stefano, Talamone) and can be reached in about half an hour, while at just fifteen minutes you can see the new tourist port of Etruria Marina (Portiglioni di Scarlino). The ferries for the islands of Elba, Giglio, Corsica, Capraia, Giannutri and Pianosa are just 40 minutes away (north of Piombino – south of Porto Santo Stefano). Ferry boat times to reach the islands range from one hour (Elba) to three (Corsica).
Thermal Baths
The Maremma has many thermal springs in the region offering extraordinary healing properties that was first discovered by the Etruscan people. From the Sassone estate, the nearest spots (famous also for their beauty farms) are Saturnia, Caldana and Venturina. You can’t miss the “biancane” or “soffioni”, volcanic vents that emit jets of steam and contain a small proportion of boric acid, near Monterotondo Marittimo.
The Maremma Natural Park is one of the most interesting and diverse in Italy and well worth a trip. The Park begins at the mouth of the Ombrone river area, rich with vegetation and marshes, like “la Trappola”, a series of shallow ponds separated by sand dunes and thick canes, home of many bird species, some of which are very rare like the beautiful “Cavalieri d’Italia” with their white body, the black wings and long fire-red legs. At the border of the marshes people still breed the typical horse of the region, the Maremman horse, and cows with long white horns. Aboard an old ferry you can cross the Trappola to the plains on the opposite side. The countryside presents many canals red with “semprevivo” weeds in every season. Between the water plants you can easily see many fish species and even water turtles. The area between the mountains and the see is like a triangle with the famous Alberese pine wood with more than 80.000 trees. Behind the pine woods you can see the “Uccellina” mountains, that once was an island with white limestone shores, filled with natural caves and towers built to protect the population from the Saracen pirate raids. The beaches are maybe the last surviving natural and untouched sea coasts in our Country, thanks to the rigid regulations that govern the access to the natural park: the shoreline goes from Principina a Mare to Cala di Forno and on the white and very fine sand you can see rare plants with colourful flowers like “eryngium”, “cardo delle sabbie”, “zigolo”, and lilium. Tourists can visit the park only on a Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday and can buy the tickets for the tour at the tourist centre in Alberese village.
Golf At Pelagone the 18 hole golf course is of competition standard and is located some 10 minutes from the estate. The Punta Ala Golf Club (18 holes golf course near the sea) is less than 40 minutes away.
Horse Riding
There is a riding school 5 km from the estate. The more expert riders can make some excursions in the surrounding woods without restrictions.
Archaeological sites
The area is very rich with remains from ancient cultures and contains many important archaeological sites and museums. An hours gentle walk from the estate brings you to the evocative Pia de’Tolomei castle, also worth visiting is the Etruscan site near the Accesa lake (ten minutes by car) and the Etruscan town at Vetulonia. Roselle is an ancient city and port of Etruscan and Roman origin. Populonia is another important site, and try not to miss the Golfo di Baratti necropolis, or Sovana.
